CEG-Awards :: Soon to be launched
« on: January 18, 2009, 05:07:43 PM »
CE Game Awards

Will be launched if no set backs end of January.

Before you start to apply for CEG-Awards, it's a good idea to make sure your game is ready for the test.

The following guidelines were made to help you prepare your game. Follow these minimum guidelines, and it will be a winner!

Purpose

You must have a clear theme for your game, and every element in your game must contribute to that purpose.

Content

* The content should be original, concise, accurate, well written, and up-to-date
* If you're not using original content, give credit to the original author
* All content must be meaningful to and useful for the intended audience
* All content should be organized into logical groups
* Games with sexual, racial, sexist, or abusive content will not be considered
* Games that present a new idea or concept and sites that offer a unique or useful service have the best chance of winning awards. Try to be original, or creative. Some of the best ideas are simply a new twist on an old idea.

Graphics

Graphics are used to improve the presentation of your game. Properly used, graphics can greatly enhance a game and its content.

The following suggestions will help you meet the criteria we use for judging the graphics at your game:

* Keep the use of "clip art" to an absolute minimum, use original graphics
* All graphics should be clear and sharp, without any "jaggies"
* All graphics should be relevant to the content of the game
* All graphics should be "gif" or "jpg", for most browsers will only display these formats
* Try to avoid excessive use of bevels and drop shadows
* Use the "height" and "width" attributes in your <img> tags to reduce the loading time
* Use the "alt" attribute in your <img> tags for some browsers do not support graphics
* Use animated graphics sparingly, and only if they are relevant to the content of the page
* Don't steal bandwidth. All the graphics in your game should be stored on your own server. Linking to graphics in other games/sites is not acceptable. It's a great way to ensure that you don't win awards!

Optimize graphics to reduce their loading time. The file size of most graphics can be reduced by 30% to 50% or more by using optimization tools that are readily available on the Web.

Design

The design of your game, how you combine the content and graphics, can transform good content into a great game. A great game will have a layout that is pleasing to the eye, and all the pages will have a consistent look and feel. It will be well organized, logical, and easy to navigate.

Establish a colour scheme for your game and keep the number of colours to a minimum. Select colours that compliment the purpose of your game. The colour scheme will help to create a consistent look and feel, and the pages will flow smoothly from one to another.

The following suggestions will help you meet the criteria we use for judging the design of your website:

* Don't try to cram your entire game into the first page, keep it short
* Your pages should look clean and crisp, not crowded and cluttered
* Break large areas of text into smaller paragraphs with subheadings, it's easier to read
* Don't use backgrounds that make it difficult to read the text
* If possible, use the same background throughout your entire website
* Keep advertising banners to an absolute minimum
* Don't use blinking text, it's very distracting
* If you use music anywhere in your game, there should be a way to turn it off
* Your HTML code should be clean and accurate, based on W3C Recommendations
* If you use frames, make sure that you use the <noframes> tag as well
* Your pages should display properly in all the major browsers
* Don't use "Under Construction" signs, good games are always under construction
* Java Applets, like every other element in your game, should be carefully chosen. Try to avoid the use of pop-up windows for JavaScript warnings.

Navigation

A game should be easy to navigate, and members should know where they are in the site at all times. If you use an image map, or a menu consisting of graphical links, you should have a text version as well.

The following suggestions will help you meet the criteria that most Award Sites use for judging the navigation of your website:

* Navigation should be intuitive and user friendly
* Provide more than one menu on longer pages, unless you're using frames
* Provide a "Back to Top" link at the bottom of longer pages
* Players should not have to use the "Back" button on their browsers to navigate
* Missing graphics and broken links, especially internal links, are another great way to ensure that you don't win awards! Make sure they work properly. If your site has a large number of links, however, a few broken external links will be forgiven by most reviewers.

Checking & Testing

Proofread all your work, then proofread it again. Check for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. If possible, get a friend or relative to proofread it as well. It's very easy to miss errors and mistakes while checking your own work.

How it works ?

* Based on the above criteria points will be given by our judges.
   1-15   1 star game
   16-30 2 star game
   31-50 3 star game
   51-70 4 star game
   71-80 5 star game

* Our judges are annonymous and not everyone is a member of the CE forums.

Almost every game will get an award ranging from 1 to 5 stars with a exclusive page for their game at ceg-awards.

A unique award logo will be available to display at your game.

Resubmitting your game will be possible after 30 days.

Yearly Top 3 awards will be given to the Best 4 Games during one year, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze Award.

Busy on it

And as it is CE Game Awards, (ceg-awards.com) bit difficult to implement categories for non game/game related sites.

This project has a been postponed a bit but working again on it.

A example of one of the checks we would do...

I took the liberty to check on the game www.Road-Wars.com from Noelle using the Horizons Game Engine

Main page - Public

  • TOTAL_HTML - Congratulations, the total number of HTML files on this page (including the main HTML file) is 1 which most browsers can multithread. Minimizing HTTP requests is key for web site optimization.
  • TOTAL_OBJECTS - Warning! The total number of objects on this page is 71 which by their number will dominate web page delay. Consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Above 20 objects per page the overhead from dealing with the actual objects (description time and wait time) accounts for more than 80% of whole page latency. Combine, refine, and optimize your external objects. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests. Consider using CSS sprites to help consolidate decorative images. Using CSS techniques such as colored backgrounds, borders, or spacing instead of graphic techniques can reduce HTTP requests. Replace graphic text headers with CSS text headers to further reduce HTTP requests. Finally, consider optimizing parallel downloads by using different hostnames or a CDN to reduce object overhead.
  • TOTAL_IMAGES - Warning! The total number of images on this page is 66 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Recommend combining, replacing, and optimizing your graphics. Replace graphic rollover menus with CSS rollover menus to speed display and minimize HTTP requests. Consider using CSS sprites to help consolidate decorative images. Use CSS techniques such as colored backgrounds, borders, or spacing instead of graphic techniques to reduce HTTP requests. Replace graphic text headers with CSS text headers to further reduce HTTP requests. Finally, consider optimizing parallel downloads by using different hostnames to reduce object overhead.
  • TOTAL_CSS - Congratulations, the total number of external CSS files on this page is 2 . Because external CSS files must be in the HEAD of your HTML document, they must load first before any BODY content displays. Although they are cached, CSS files slow down the initial display of your page. Remember to place CSS files in the HEAD and JavaScript files at the end of the BODY to enable progressive display.
  • TOTAL_SIZE - Warning! The total size of this page is 592349 bytes, which will load in 132.25 seconds on a 56Kbps modem. Consider reducing total page size to less than 100K to achieve sub 20 second response times on 56K connections. Pages over 100K exceed most attention thresholds at 56Kbps, even with feedback.
  • TOTAL_SCRIPT - Congratulations, the total number of external script files on this page is 2 . External scripts are less reliably cached than CSS files so consider combining scripts into one to minimize HTTP requests, or even embedding them into high-traffic pages. Placing external JavaScript files at the bottom of your BODY, and CSS files in the HEAD enables progressive display in XHTML web pages.
  • HTML_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of this HTML file is 9017 bytes, which less than 50K. Assuming that you specify the HEIGHT and WIDTH of your images, this size allows your HTML to display content in under 10 seconds, the average time users are willing to wait for a page to display without feedback.
  • IMAGES_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your images is 478347 bytes, which is over 100K. Consider switch graphic formats to achive smaller file sizes (from JPEG to PNG for example). Finally, substitute CSS techniques for graphics techniques to create colored borders, backgrounds, and spacing.
  • SCRIPT_SIZE - Warning! The total size of external your scripts is 58537 bytes, which is over 20K. Consider optimizing your JavaScript for size, combining them, and using HTTP compression where appropriate for any scripts placed in the HEAD of your documents. You can substitute CSS menus for JavaScript-based menus to minimize or even eliminate the use of JavaScript.
  • CSS_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your external CSS is 46448 bytes, which is over 20K. Consider optimizing your CSS for size by eliminating whitespace, using shorthand notation, and combining multiple CSS files where appropriate. By using labeled container cells and descendant selectors you can target chunks of HTML content efficiently without the need to embed extra classes and styles.
  • MULTIM_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of all your external multimedia files is 0 bytes, which is less than 10K.

This first part would give 4.5/10 points now this is only one segment and 1 star would already be awarded to www.road-wars.com from a maximum of 5 possible stars or a bronze, silver, gold, platinum award. (+80 points for the last ones)

Hey, just wanted to comment on the stats from Road Wars.

TOTAL_OBJECTS -- I'm guessing this refers to Javascript objects?

The javascript code for the most part exists in self calling anonymous functions and the code in those functions is normally executed during the "onDOMReady" event or the "onContentReady" event, deferring execution until the either the DOM tree is ready (everything but images are rendered) or when a certain element is ready (that element and all child elements are rendered except for images)

This leaves the browser in a state where the page can be rendered, and then the javascript is executed only when it needs to. Buttons and menus should be rendered as soon as the HTML for them is available or else, the screen will flicker from it's unrendered to it's rendered state.

There should only be a few global Javascript objects since everything lives inside of self calling anonymous functions and any memory usage can be easily reclaimed since the only remnants of the ann. functions will be event handlers and any variables that live on in closure.

TOTAL_IMAGES I have no idea where 66 images comes from. The default Horizons login page has 4 images. The index.php page has 6. Perhaps Road Wars has added a ton of images I'm not aware of, but I'd like to know where that 66 images number comes from.

TOTAL_SIZE This is definitely caused by the banner on the login page, which is over 400k in size. The default login page size (with a banner) is 132.7KB.

IMAGES_SIZE See above...

CSS_SIZE Yes, there is a lot of css, but it's the same sheet used for the entire game. Thus, it will be cached, and really shouldn't be a problem.

Stats for the default Horizons Login page are:

4.9K   2   HTML/Texts
50.5K   2   JavaScript Files
20.5K   1   Stylesheet File
8.9K   2   CSS Images
47.8K   2   Images
132.7K   Total size
9   HTTP requests

And it gets a YSlow performance grade of:
Performance Grade: B (89)

The only rating below a B is "Use a CDN". It costs money to use a CDN. It simply isn't necessary for little ole me to use one. Your game however can use one if you like, and your rating should soar up into the mid 90's.

You get all this with the default Horizons Game Engine which has been developed from the ground up with performance as one of our top priorities.

Here you go, so you will see the 66 images, using a CSS Sprite image would reduce it a lot as reducing the http requests.

True, but any web designer and graphics artist should know that the size is way overboard, it's a killer not optimized for a website.

Your method of divining the image count is fundamentally flawed. Just because a css rule has an image listed, doesn't mean a request is generated for that image. That image is only looked up if that particular css rule is used.

I'd say that presents a strong bias in your testing results by counting about 50 images that are never used and never requested on the page.

I'll consede to large img sizes and this has been rectified, as for the rest, there is some flawed logic, but img size would of never crossed my mind, so thanks for point that out.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Well, for sure then I must not submit my game to this award system, or otherwise I will explode the stats:

When a player enter a 2D map the browser may load up to 2000 images (I'm not kidding). There is a minimum of 2-3 Javascript per page, and a minimum of 4 IFRAMEs always open... so I guess my own layout / game is way too much... specific

like said it's only one part and that would be on the main page, main page load time etc is a primary factor also for players to join or not imo

this segment only counts for max 10 points

and you aren't bad at all

Total HTTP Requests:   34
Total Size:   129156 bytes

External Object   QTY
Total HTML:   1
Total HTML Images:   11
Total CSS Images:   21
Total Images:   32
Total Scripts:   0
Total CSS imports:   1
Total Frames:   0
Total Iframes:   0

your score would be  6.5/10 on this segment
